By air

Main international airports in Slovakia are: Bratislava Airport (BTS) and Košice Airport (KSC)

The national carrier Air Slovakia offers charter flights to Hungary and the Czech Republic.

By river

Although, Slovakia is a landlocked country, it is possible to arrive there by water. Mahart PassNave offers daily hydrofoil service on the Danube River linking Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. This service is available from April to November.

By bus

There are numerous coach services to Slovakia from Austria, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom and other European countries. The company that offers such routes is Eurolines.

Slovakia has direct rail connections with Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine.


By car

The main border crossings of Slovakia are:
Ruske Sedlo, Osadné, Palota, Čertižné, Vyšný Komárnik and Nižná Polianka (Polish border);
Čierna nad Tisou, Ubľa, Veľké Slemence and Vyšné Nemecké (Ukrainian border);

GETTING AROUND


By bus/tram

In major towns one can travel by buses, trams and trolleys. Tickets can be bought from yellow ticket machines at the public transport stops or from newspaper stands.


By taxi

Taxis are generally cheap. They can be ordered by phone, found at taxi stands or hailed in the street. When ordering by phone, the lower rate applies. All official taxis are equipped with taximeters.


By car

Driving is on the right side of the road. Foreigners need an International Driving Permit and their driving licence. Drivers must also have third-party insurance documents and car registration documents. There is a zero tolerance policy for drunk driving. Driver and passengers must wear seat belts. Children under 150 cm must travel in child seats. Speed limits: built-up areas – 50 km/h, motorways and expressways – 80/90 km/h. A warning triangle, first aid kit, spare bulb set and a reflective vest are obligatory. The use of dipped headlights is obligatory at all times.
