By air

The main international airport in the Netherlands is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

By sea

The main sea ports are Hoek van Holland and Rotterdam. There are ferry services to the Netherlands from the United Kingdom (Stena Line, P&O Ferries, DFDS Seaways).

By bus

There are regular coach services to Holland from many European countries. Such routes are offered for example by Eurolines.

By train

The Netherlands has direct rail connections with France, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom.


By car

The Netherlands is connected with the neighbouring countries through a number of excellent roads. The main border crossings are Maastricht (Belgian border), Kerkrade (German border) and Vaals (German and Belgian borders).



GETTING AROUND


By bus/tram

Public transport in Holland is reliable and efficient. In Amsterdam one can travel by tram, bus, underground or ferry. In Rotterdam – by bus, tram and underground. In The Hague – by bus or tram. Tickets can be bought from ticket machines.


By taxi

Taxis have ‘taxi’ signs on the roof and blue license plate. They can be found at taxi stands or ordered by phone. Hailing a cab in the street is less common. All official taxis have meters.


By car

Driving is on the right side of the road. International and foreign driving licenses are accepted. Driver must also have insurance documents and car registration documents. Driver must not drive with a blood alcohol level of more than 0.5 grams/litre. Driver and passengers must wear seat belts. Speed limits: built-up areas – 50 km/h, open roads – 80 km/h, highways – 120 km/h. It is recommended to carry also in the car a red warning triangle and a reflective vest.
