By air

By sea

By bus

There are many regular coach services to Germany from other European countries. Companies such as Eurolines offer direct routes to Germany, for example from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.

By car

Germany is connected with the neighbouring countries by a vast network of motorways. The main border crossings include: Harrislee and Padborg (Danish border); Kerkrade, Nordhorn and Vaals (Dutch border); (Belgian border); Kehl and Weil am Rhein (French border); Großschönau, Rumburk, Seifhennersdorf, Varnsdorf and Zittau (Czech border); and Forst, Frankfurt and Görlitz (Polish border).



GETTING AROUND


By bus/tram

Public transport in Germany is efficient. In cities one can travel by buses, trams, suburban trains (S-Bahn) and underground (U-Bahn). Tickets can be purchased fromticket machines.


By taxi

Taxis can be found at taxi stands, hailed in the streets and ordered by phone. Vehicles are cream-coloured and have yellow ‘taxi’ sign on the roof. They are equipped with taximeters.


By car

Driving is on the right side of the road. International and foreign driving licenses are accepted. Driver must also have insurance documents and car registration documents. Driver must not drive with a blood alcohol level of more than 0.5 grams/litre. Driver and passengers must wear seat belts. Speed limits: built-up areas – 50 km/h, highways – 100 km/h, motorways – no speed limit (but 130 km/h is the recommended maximum speed). Mandatory equipment include: first-aid kit, headlamp converters and visibility vests.
