ACTIVITIES

Beaches

Although Belgium has only 65 km of coastline, it is one of the main attractions of the country. Beautiful white sandy Belgian beaches are perfect for single sunbathers, families and enthusiasts of water sports. They are safe and clean. The most popular seaside resorts include Ostend, De Haan, Blankenberg and Zeebrugge.

Sightseeing

Brussels has a lot of tourist attractions such as St Michael and St Gudule’s Cathedral, the Beaux Art Museum with a great collection of ancient Greek and Roman exhibits, the Manneken Pis – the famous statue of a little boy ‘pissing,’ and the Grand Place – one of the most magnificent squares in Europe. However, other Belgian cities are equally attractive. The most recommended are Heysel, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges.

Hiking/Walking

There are numerous well-marked routes suitable for beginners and more experienced hikers. The best region for hiking is the southern part of the country which is more hilly than the north. But there are nice trails to be found all over the country.

Skiing

Belgium is more famous for the delicious chocolates than for skiing but, in fact, it is a great skiing destination. The best ski resorts (and ski conditions) can be found in the Ardennes. Besides downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and scooter tours are also very popular.

Water sports

The Belgian coast offers excellent facilities for water sports lovers. There is a wide range of opportunities – from sailing to kite-surfing. Another thing worth mentioning is the Belgian Boat Show – the famous event for the enthusiasts of water sports.

Fishing

Fishing in Belgium requires an annual fishing license. There are two types of licenses: one that allows fishing from the bank (13 euro) and the second that allows to fish from a boat (38 euro). Fish species commonly found in the Belgian waters include barbell, chub, grayling, perch, pike and trout.

Rock climbing

Although the Ardennes are obviously not the Alps and the highest peak is 694 m high, Belgium has a lot to offer for climbers. There are numerous indoor gyms, as well as climbing routes and boulders waiting for enthusiasts of rock climbing.

Nightlife

There are various ways to spend a great evening in Belgium. In every major city there are bars, traditional pubs, nightclubs, jazz clubs and dance clubs. Alternatively, one may go for an evening in a fine restaurant, opera or theatre. Finally, Belgium is a country of carnivals and festivals such as Graspop, Carnival de Binche and Dour Festival.

Others

Holidays in Belgium wouldn’t be complete without sampling three traditional Belgian delicacies: chocolates, moules frites and beer. While in Bruges, taking a canal boat ride is a great way to explore the city from the different perspective. Other activities popular in Belgium include cycling, horse riding, playing golf and brewery tours.
